“Blue” indicates the color, “Jeans” the city of origin. Both have made their first step at Genoa's ancient seaport and later spread all over the world by the bustling sea trade. The name “Blue Jeans” comes from “Blue de Genes” (blue of Genoa). Interestingly it was this name that was given by the locals to the blue textiles used to manufacture sails and covers for the precious stores in the ship's provisions. The Oxford English Dictionary states that the date of birth of the Blue Jeans goes as far back as 1567.
